Authorities in Western Bahr el Ghazal have given the green light for security forces to employ live ammunition against gang members who are believed to be responsible for a recent wave of violence and insecurity in Wau.

The decision was made during a meeting of the State Security Committee, where officials expressed deep concern over the increasing number of machete attacks, burglaries, and armed robberies.

Dansio William, the Mayor of Wau Town, confirmed the directive and stated that security personnel, including the army, police, national security, prison service, and civil defence, have been instructed to use lethal force when necessary.

“If individuals are apprehended for perpetrating machete attacks, robberies, or home invasions, they are to be met with gunfire,” Mayor Dansio declared. “These gangs pose a significant threat to the peace of Wau.”

General Jiel Mangong Yel, the Commander of SSPDF Division Five, also expressed alarm over the gangs’ increasing level of organization, likening them to criminal militias.

“They have established their own hierarchy, with titles such as ‘His Excellency’ and appointed ministers in charge of defence, finance, and information,” Gen. Jiel explained. “They are equipped with machetes, pistols, and even firearms. When security forces attempt to disperse them using warning shots, they retaliate. This is no longer mere petty crime; it is organized resistance.”

This directive signals a heightened crackdown on gang-related violence within the state as authorities pledge to restore peace and security in Wau.
