(JUBA) – The National Ministry of Wildlife Conservation and Tourism has announced plans to register and classify all hotels, tour operators, and travel agencies across South Sudan under the new Tourism Act 2024.

Director General for Tourism, Laura Tete, said the registration process will ensure that all operators meet the professional standards required by the ministry. She emphasised that any hotel or travel business operating without official registration will risk closure.

According to the Wildlife Ministry, the  initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to standardise tourism services and improve the country’s appeal to both domestic and international visitors.

The ministry has identified several key destinations for promotion, including Boma National Park, Nimule Falls, and Kapoeta cultural sites. These locations are considered safe and accessible and will form the foundation for South Sudan’s tourism growth strategy.

Ms Tete also noted that registration and classification will help improve service quality, ensure safety for tourists, and create opportunities for investment in the sector. The ministry said it aims to boost tourism revenue, generate jobs, and support small and medium enterprises operating in hospitality and travel by implementing clear standards.

Tourism experts in South Sudan have welcomed the move, saying it will bring transparency, professionalism, and confidence to investors and visitors. They also highlighted that a well regulated tourism sector can diversify the economy, which currently relies heavily on oil exports.

The Ministry of Wildlife Conservation and Tourism will roll out the registration process in phases, beginning with major urban centres and popular tourist regions before extending to more remote areas. Operators have been encouraged to register promptly to avoid penalties and disruptions to business operations.
