(KYIV, UKRAINE) – President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has effectively countered attempts by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to leverage energy infrastructure for political concessions, describing European pressure regarding the Druzhba oil pipeline as “blackmail” and a “sanctions roll back in disguise.” The Ukrainian leader revealed that certain European officials have attempted to condition future military aid on the restoration of Russian oil transit revenues.

The dispute has intensified as Mr Orban approaches a national election in three weeks. Analysts observe that the Hungarian leader has positioned the pipeline blockage as the central pillar of his re-election campaign.

Ukraine has utilised the situation, stemming from damage to the pipeline caused by Russian military action, as a strategic lever. Although Kyiv initially stated repairs would require a two week period, the delay has forced Mr Orban to publicly link his veto of a critical European Union financial package to the pipeline status.

The financial package in question is a 90 billion Euro loan intended for Ukraine, which at current exchange rates is valued at approximately 103.57 billion US Dollars or 4.57 trillion Ukrainian Hryvnia.

Mr Orban has maintained a “no oil, no money” stance, threatening to block these funds unless the flow to Hungary and Slovakia is restored. However, President Zelenskyy has countered this by agreeing to the European Union offer to help restore the Druzhba flow, effectively removing the stated justification for the Hungarian veto.

This diplomatic manoeuvre places Mr Orban in a difficult position regarding his commitments to the Russian dictator to stall funding to Kyiv.

Internal pressure in Hungary is also mounting, evidenced by a recent opposition rally in Bucharest where an estimated 500,000 citizens gathered to protest the current administration. Demonstrators displayed imagery depicting Mr Orban as a Russian nesting doll with the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin as the hidden power within, suggesting significant domestic dissatisfaction ahead of the upcoming polls.
