(Juba) – The Anyuak community in South Sudan has welcomed the return of their traditional leader, His Majesty King Akwai Agada Akwai, who arrived in Juba on Friday after several months of medical treatment in the United States.

King Akwai’s arrival at Juba International Airport was met with a large turnout of community members, government officials and cultural groups.

Traditional dancers performed alongside drummers as the monarch was received with songs and cheers from hundreds of people who had gathered to show their respect and happiness.

Although details of the King’s medical condition were not shared publicly, community sources confirmed that he had undergone treatment for several months and is now in better health.

His Majesty did not address the media immediately upon arrival, but aides close to the royal household said he would speak to the community in the coming days during a thanksgiving ceremony being planned in Juba.

The Anyuak people are mainly found in eastern South Sudan and parts of western Ethiopia.
