(Aweil) – James Aguer Alich, a Member of Parliament in the Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU), has called on leaders of the Aweil community to organise a special ceremony to honour musicians from neighbouring communities who have praised Aweil in their songs.
He made this appeal during the launch of the Ayat Students’ Association in Juba on Saturday.
Alich said the songs had played an important role in celebrating Aweil’s beauty, unity, and peacefulness, and should not go unnoticed. He stated that some of the artists had composed pieces that highlighted Aweil’s contributions to the liberation struggle and promoted harmony across communities.
He added that recognising these musicians would be a gesture of appreciation and a way to strengthen peaceful coexistence in South Sudan.
He further revealed that he would consult with Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Governor Simon Ober to explore the possibility of holding the proposed event in Aweil Town. According to Alich, the celebration would bring together artists and members of the public in a formal setting to express gratitude for the positive image of Aweil promoted through music.
Over the years, Aweil has received recognition from artists in neighbouring regions who have composed songs praising its role in the country’s history, its peaceful people, and its cultural identity.
Among the artists mentioned by Alich were Kimo Makem, Nyakol Mathiang, Achuei Deng Ajiing, PG Machar, Aleu Maller, and Mathuc Baak Deng, among others.
In a related matter, the MP also asked the leadership of the Ayat Students’ Association to identify at least three vulnerable students who could benefit from educational support. He promised to sponsor their education until completion.
