The Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Tombura-Yambio, Barani Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala, has encouraged South Sudanese to carefully consider the decisions they make daily, advising them to nurture positive qualities within themselves rather than perpetuate negative forces such as hatred, corruption, and violence.

During his sermon on the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Bishop Kussala used the metaphor of “two beasts” residing within each individual one representing virtues like love, compassion, and truth, and the other symbolizing anger, corruption, division, and destruction.

He emphasised the importance of the company one keeps, stating, “It depends on which beast you feed. Surround yourself with those who promote peace, justice, and truth, and you will strengthen the goodness within you.”

Drawing parallels between his message and South Sudan’s current challenges, Bishop Kussala highlighted the crucial role individual choices play in shaping the nation’s future. He cautioned against values of greed, nepotism, and violence, which have perpetuated cycles of conflict since independence.

Encouraging a shift towards truth, fairness, and compassion, even at personal sacrifice, Bishop Kussala stressed, “We are all children of God. It is vital that we make choices that align with our values as individuals and as a nation.”

“The future of our nation rests on the choices we make. Choose to nourish the beast of goodness within you, for it will not only shape your character but also determine the path of our country,” he concluded.
