(JUBA) – A group of South Sudanese leaders and concerned citizens have issued a strong statement defending the legitimacy of Vice President Dr Benjamin Bol Mel’s temporary role as Acting President, following growing speculation and misinformation circulating on social media platforms.
The statement, released on 3 July 2025 and signed by Hon. James Wieu Mayol, former State Minister and Acting Governor of the now-defunct Aweil State, described the claims against Dr Bol Mel as “malicious”, “fabricated”, and intended to discredit both his leadership and the broader image of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).
The controversy arose after unverified online reports suggested that Dr Bol Mel was attempting to “occupy” the presidency while President Salva Kiir Mayardit is on an official mission abroad. The authors of the statement categorically denied these reports, stating that the appointment of Dr Bol Mel as Acting President followed constitutional procedures and SPLM internal protocols.
According to the statement, the appointment is not a power grab or symbolic gesture but rather a constitutionally backed role aimed at ensuring the smooth functioning of government during the president’s absence.
Dr Bol Mel, who also serves as Vice President for the Economic Cluster and First Deputy Chairman of the SPLM, was entrusted with the acting presidency based on his seniority, loyalty, and experience in leading the country’s economic agenda.
“This is a legally sound and procedurally standard appointment,” the statement affirmed. “The role of Acting President is a constitutional responsibility conferred upon a competent and senior official within the ruling party.”
The authors criticised those spreading the misinformation, arguing that such actions were politically motivated and intended to create confusion, fuel factionalism within the SPLM, and shift attention away from the country’s socioeconomic challenges.
They called upon South Sudanese citizens, media practitioners, and political analysts to uphold ethical standards in journalism and public communication.
The statement urged the public to focus on development, peacebuilding, and unity instead of engaging in “media sensationalism and factional intrigue”.
“There is no official directive from the Office of the President indicating any change in leadership,” it added. “Dr Benjamin Bol Mel remains in full service to the nation, with the humility and competence expected of a constitutional office holder.”
The authors concluded by urging the public to stand behind leaders who are working to deliver national stability, inclusive economic growth, and long term peace, emphasising that South Sudan must not be distracted by politically driven distortions at a time when development remains a top priority.
