The swearing-in of Moulona James Al-Teib Jazz Berapai as the new Governor and SPLM Chairman of Western Equatoria State has raised discussions on whether the ruling party can overcome internal divisions and political instability in the region.
Taking over from Hon. Badagbu Daniel Rimbasa, Al-Teib steps into office at a time when the SPLM in Western Equatoria is grappling with factionalism, personal conflicts, and senior members prioritising personal interests over party unity.
During his inauguration speech at the National SPLM Secretariat in Juba, Al-Teib outlined ambitious reforms beyond routine governance. He laid out a four-point agenda, including reviewing cases of detainees in WES prisons, enhancing land administration through training, restarting road projects, and engaging with citizens in the counties alongside his deputy.
Al-Teib stated, “Our goal is to restore faith in SPLM leadership, unite the party, serve the people, and ensure unity in Western Equatoria. We are focused on building trust, not barriers.”
