Cardinal Archbishop, Dr. Stephen Ameyu, has delivered a prayer for peace and non violence in South Sudan during an event commemorating 70 years since the country’s liberation struggle began.
In his address, Cardinal Ameyu encouraged South Sudan’s leaders and citizens to embrace peaceful methods of conflict resolution, drawing inspiration from those who advocated for justice without resorting to violence.
Reflecting on the teachings of Pope Francis, Cardinal Ameyu emphasised the importance of promoting development as a means to achieve peace, highlighting the detrimental effects of war and military activities on overall progress.
Advocating for a renewed dedication to non-violence, the Archbishop urged South Sudan to eschew armed conflict as a solution and instead prioritise truth and justice.
Drawing from the Beatitudes, a set of blessings from the Gospel of Matthew, Dr. Ameyu called on both leaders and citizens to embody qualities of mercy, humility, and peacebuilding amidst the prevailing political and social tensions.
“We pray for a reinvigorated commitment to non violence as the primary approach to addressing political and social challenges in South Sudan. May the examples of those who championed justice without violence, utilising only the tools of truth and justice, serve as a source of inspiration for present and future generations,” he concluded.
