(KAMPALA) – Uganda’s Grand Mufti, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, has renewed the appointment of Sheikh Twaha Uthuman Kajaaya Musa as his Special Envoy to the Republic of South Sudan for a fresh five year term, reaffirming efforts to deepen cross border Islamic cooperation.

The reappointment was officially confirmed in a letter issued on Friday evening, 25 July 2025. Sheikh Kajaaya’s extended mandate takes effect from 12 July 2025 and runs until 2030.

The letter was formally addressed to Sheikh Abdallah Baraji Rual, Secretary General (Grand Mufti) of the South Sudan Islamic Council. Copies of the communication were shared with relevant religious and civil authorities in both Uganda and South Sudan.

Mufti Mubaje commended Sheikh Kajaaya’s efforts over the past years, noting his active role in strengthening Islamic ties and institutional collaboration between the two neighbouring countries. He described the envoy’s work as instrumental in fostering regional unity and shared religious values.

The Mufti particularly highlighted Sheikh Kajaaya’s leadership in organising a recent workshop for South Sudanese Muslim leaders, which was held in Uganda. The week long event was conducted in partnership with the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) and the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU).

The workshop brought together clerics, educators and religious leaders from across South Sudan to engage on issues of Islamic education, unity and administrative development. Ugandan religious scholars participated in the sessions, which were designed to build stronger institutional frameworks among Muslim communities in both countries.

Sheikh Kajaaya has served as the Mufti’s envoy to South Sudan for several years and has become a familiar figure in interreligious and diplomatic circles in Juba.

His role as Special Envoy includes advisory functions, coordination of educational exchanges and representation of Uganda’s Muslim leadership in forums concerning South Sudan.
