The Ministry of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services (MOICT&PS) of South Sudan, in collaboration with the World Bank, has revealed plans to commence the installation of a fibre optic cable linking Kenya to South Sudan in early 2026.

This initiative is anticipated to enhance internet connectivity in the country and establish stronger connections with neighbouring networks.

The announcement was made by Mabe Emmanuel, Secretary General of the Universal Service and Access Fund (USAF), following the Ministry’s 13th leadership meeting held in Juba on Thursday.

Mr Emmanuel stated that under the leadership of Minister Michael Makuei Lueth, the Ministry is currently in the process of assembling technical teams to conduct feasibility studies and environmental assessments in preparation for the official commencement of the project in early 2026.

During the leadership meeting, discussions also included the refurbishment of the historic “Radio Juba” premises to serve as the Ministry’s new headquarters, as the current facility is inadequate.

Engineer Mabe disclosed that the renovation is estimated to cost approximately 4 million US dollars, equivalent to around 18.4 billion South Sudanese pounds (SSP) based on the official exchange rate of 1 USD = 4,600 SSP (July 2025).

The World Bank’s participation is set to provide financial and technical backing for the project, aligning with broader initiatives to advance digital inclusion in the East African region.
