The Police Commissioner in Western Equatoria State has verified that five suspects have been apprehended in relation to the recent slaying of a senior education official in Yambio.

Major General Philip Madut Tong informed Eye Radio from Yambio town that the individuals stand accused of the murder of Peter Mbia, the Director-General of the Ministry of Education.

Mbia was tragically shot and killed at his residence in Yambio a fortnight ago.

The incident has triggered widespread condemnation and calls for prompt judicial action throughout the state.

This incident has exacerbated the already strained situation in the state, particularly in Tambura County, where targeted killings and road ambushes have been reported in recent times.

General Tong did not disclose the identities of the suspects or the date of their apprehension, but confirmed that they are currently in custody and undergoing investigation.

“We have apprehended several individuals in connection with the murder of the director general. The case has been prepared and we will be transferring them to the court as they are currently under investigation; there are five suspects in total,” he said.

He also remarked that the overall security situation has shown improvement in recent days.

“This morning, Yambio town is peaceful, thanks to God, despite incidents of looting and rising costs of living. Over the past 24 hours, no new cases have been reported. Even in Tambura, the situation has stabilized, with no negative reports,” he added.

After a prolonged period without a governor following the dismissal of former Governor Alfred Futuyo Karaba, President Salva Kiir has appointed James Al-Taib Jaz Berapai as the new governor of Western Equatoria State.

In addition, the former acting governor and deputy, Daniel Badagbu Rimbasa, have been relieved of their duties, with Justin Joseph Marona taking on the role of the new deputy governor.
