South Sudan has taken a significant step in space science education by launching a national programme aimed at introducing space studies to schools across the country. The initiative was officially launched on Wednesday, 10 September 2025, at the Mayardit Academy for Space Sciences.

The programme was inaugurated by the Honourable Minister of General Education, marking South Sudan’s entry into the global network of nations promoting space science learning among young students. Officials said the initiative is designed to foster interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, while preparing future generations to contribute to the country’s development and innovation sectors.

Prof. John Akec, an education expert and advocate for science advancement in South Sudan, highlighted the importance of the programme in nurturing local talent and positioning the country as part of the growing global space community. He noted that early exposure to space science can inspire students to pursue careers in research, technology, and related disciplines.

The Ministry of General Education stated that the programme would include curriculum development, teacher training, and hands-on activities such as space observation, robotics, and scientific experiments. Students at participating schools will have the opportunity to engage with practical projects and learn from both local and international experts.
