(MALAKAL) – The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has welcomed a new contingent of Rwandan peacekeepers who have assumed their duties in Malakal, Upper Nile State. The troops, known as Rwanbatt-2, officially took over from their colleagues on Monday, August 18, in a routine rotation aimed at sustaining peace operations in the region.

The UNMISS Sector North Commander, Major General Nakul Rayamajhi, received the incoming troops and commended the outgoing contingent for their professionalism and dedication throughout their service. He urged the new unit to maintain the highest standards of discipline and commitment as they take on their responsibilities.

Upon arrival, the new contingent commander, Lieutenant Colonel Robert Rwagihungu, briefed the Sector Commander on the operational readiness and deployment plan of the forces. The unit will continue the mission of protecting civilians, facilitating humanitarian assistance, and contributing to stability in conflict affected areas.

Major General Rayamajhi reminded the peacekeepers that their conduct and performance not only represent the Rwanda Defence Force but also reflect on the United Nations as a whole. He emphasised the importance of teamwork, vigilance, and dedication to duty.

With the rotation now complete, Rwanbatt-2 has fully taken over its responsibilities in Sector North, reaffirming Rwanda’s strong role in peacekeeping efforts in South Sudan.

Rwanda has become one of the largest contributors of uniformed personnel to United Nations missions worldwide. As of May 2025, the country had deployed 5,880 personnel, including more than 1,000 police officers, second only to Nepal in troop contributions.

For South Sudan, where communities continue to face the effects of years of conflict and insecurity, the arrival of new peacekeepers is viewed as an important step in maintaining humanitarian access and supporting ongoing peace efforts.
