President Salva Kiir Mayardit was briefed on Thursday by Jonglei State Governor, Dr. Riek Gai Kok, regarding the state’s security situation and agricultural productivity.
Following the meeting in Juba, Governor Kok spoke to the press, describing the security conditions in Jonglei as “relatively calm,” with a noticeable decrease in inter-communal violence in the Greater Jonglei region.
He highlighted ongoing peace talks between youth from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) and Jonglei communities, aiming to address longstanding issues and promote peaceful coexistence.
Governor Kok stated, “The youth from Pibor and Jonglei are engaging in discussions to resolve misunderstandings and build a foundation for sustainable peace.”
With the improved security, communities have been able to return to farming. Kok mentioned that farmers have enthusiastically embraced agriculture this season, and with stability prevailing, a successful harvest is anticipated.
President Kiir praised the progress and commended the state government for its efforts to promote peace and boost the local economy.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting Jonglei in maintaining peace and promoting economic growth through agriculture.
Jonglei State has historically been a region plagued by conflict, with frequent communal clashes, cattle raids, and child abductions involving neighboring communities, particularly GPAA. These conflicts have disrupted livelihoods, agriculture, and led to the displacement of many.
Recent peace initiatives led by the state government, along with community dialogues and national reconciliation efforts, have contributed to a more peaceful environment in the region.
Agriculture, which had been abandoned due to insecurity, is now making a comeback as a vital source of sustenance for local residents.
