Leaders, civil society, and citizens in Yambio County are urging for increased public involvement in South Sudan’s permanent constitution making process, emphasizing its crucial role in shaping the future of democracy, elections, and governance.

During the launch of a new phase of the constitution project by SPIDO Organization, supported by UNDP, stakeholders highlighted the importance of unity, accountability, and grassroots engagement. Mr. Morris John, the project officer for SPIDO, stressed the need for citizens to actively participate in national processes and advocated for the release of the approved budget to support the National Constitutional Review Commission (NCRC).

Western Equatoria State Acting Governor, Hon. John Bariona Farula, underscored the significance of upholding laws and warned against the detrimental effects of nepotism and corruption on justice. He urged citizens to play a proactive role in ensuring the success of the constitution-making process.

Yambio County Executive Director expressed appreciation for SPIDO’s initiative but raised concerns about the lack of civic education for citizens regarding the NCRC. Calls for urgent cooperation to address this issue were made to secure the future of the constitution-making process.

Yambio resident, Jimmy Albert, living with a disability, called for the new constitution to protect the rights of all individuals, including those with disabilities. The completion of the permanent constitution is a key element of the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement (R-ARCSS) and will determine the framework for future elections, power sharing, and rights protection.

The NCRC has initiated civic education and plans to launch consultations in various regions, but progress has been hindered by funding challenges.
