(JUBA) – The South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) has affirmed its neutral stance in the ongoing clashes between rival forces in Sudan, while maintaining readiness to safeguard key oil installations and support regional stability.
Lieutenant General Johnson Olony, Chief Assistant for Mobilization and Disarmament, told state television SSBC that SSPDF units are holding positions around the Heglig oilfield as fighting between Sudanese warring factions approaches the area.
This follows media reports indicating that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have taken control of the strategic Heglig oilfield. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) stated on Monday that they had withdrawn from the area.
Olony emphasised that SSPDF’s role is focused on security and protection, rather than involvement in the Sudan conflict. “Our mission is to ensure that key oil facilities remain safe and to contribute to peace and stability in the region,” he said.
South Sudan’s proximity to Sudan makes the security of border oil infrastructure critical for national and regional energy interests. The Heglig oilfield has historically been a major source of crude for the region, and any disruption could have economic consequences for both countries.
