(JUBA) – The Government of South Sudan has expressed renewed commitment to promoting the participation of women in the country’s media sector as part of its broader political transition.
The statement was delivered by Deputy Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services, Hon. David Yauyau Jangkuoh, during a workshop organised in Juba on 6 November 2025 by the Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS), with support from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
The Deputy Minister said strengthening the role of women in journalism is important for the country as it continues work on the constitution and prepares for elections. He noted that women make up more than half of South Sudan’s population and should therefore have a strong voice in shaping national dialogue and governance.
The Ministry is responsible for developing and guiding government policy on information and communication, supporting the growth of a free press, and ensuring citizens have access to information that helps them take part in the nation’s development. T
he Deputy Minister said the workshop aligns with these goals, particularly where it concerns inclusive access to information.
Hon. Jangkuoh said women journalists have a key role to play in public communication and civic engagement.
He noted that they can help ensure that community concerns and national priorities are fairly represented in media coverage, especially during the constitution and election processes. He also encouraged responsible reporting to prevent misinformation.
He said the workshop provides an opportunity for women in media, law, and security to build professional networks and contribute to a more informed society.
The initiative focuses on improving understanding of political processes and creating a supportive environment for women journalists.
The Deputy Minister commended UJOSS and UNMISS for bringing attention to gender participation in media and for providing a platform for dialogue and cooperation among stakeholders. He noted that such collaboration is important for practical progress.
He said the government remains committed to supporting a diverse and responsible media sector, and to removing barriers that prevent women from fully taking part in journalism and public affairs.
The Deputy Minister concluded by encouraging continued cooperation among institutions and participants to ensure that women’s voices are respected and represented in national discussions.
He officially opened the workshop, expressing confidence that it would contribute to strengthening South Sudan’s democratic progress.
