(JUBA) – India is strengthening its role as a leading destination for South Sudanese seeking medical treatment abroad, following a health awareness seminar held in Juba by the Embassy of India in partnership with Medicover Hospitals of Hyderabad.

The event took place during the Seva Pakhwada period from 15 September to 2 October and brought together Members of Parliament, senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other ministries, doctors, hospital administrators, and media.

Dr. Koteshwara Prasad Veeragandham, a senior consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Medicover, delivered a detailed presentation on modern medical technologies available in India. These include joint replacement, cancer treatment, organ transplant and robotic-assisted surgery.

Representatives from Medicover Hospitals explained that many South Sudanese patients are already travelling to India for healthcare services. To strengthen this link, the hospital group announced plans to begin offering local consultations in South Sudan in partnership with local hospitals. This would allow patients to receive preliminary medical advice and follow-up support at home, reducing costs and improving convenience.

The Ambassador of India to South Sudan urged Medicover to continue prioritising patient care while upholding Indian values of hospitality and ethics. He encouraged the visiting team to make regular visits to Juba to support patients directly and deepen bilateral health cooperation.

India has become a preferred medical destination for South Sudanese for several reasons. Its hospitals offer modern facilities and affordable treatment compared to many other countries. The ease of obtaining visas, reliable air connections, and cultural familiarity also make India attractive for patients.

For South Sudan, where local healthcare capacity is still limited, medical partnerships of this kind are seen as crucial. They not only provide South Sudanese citizens with better access to treatment but also create opportunities for knowledge sharing, professional training and investment in the health sector.

The collaboration could also open new business avenues, as more private South Sudanese hospitals may seek to partner with Indian institutions to expand services locally. This may help reduce the high costs of overseas travel for treatment.
