(JUBA) – The Republic of South Sudan has rolled out a digital platform that allows foreign nationals to apply for visas online, streamlining the process for visitors seeking entry into the country.

The e-visa service, managed by the Directorate of Civil Registry, Nationality, Passports and Immigration under the Ministry of Interior, aims to simplify travel to South Sudan and reduce processing time at ports of entry such as Juba International Airport.

The official portal accessible at https://evisa.gov.ss enables travellers to apply for a visa in just three steps: creating an account, completing the online form and making a payment via credit or debit card. Once the application is approved, applicants receive their e-visa in PDF format, usually within 72 hours. Travellers are advised to print the visa in colour and present it at the border.

Upon arrival, a visa officer at the entry point verifies the e-visa and checks supporting documents. If there are no issues, the traveller’s passport is stamped and entry is granted. The system aims to cut down waiting times at the border to under five minutes per visitor.

This digital upgrade is part of the government’s wider push to improve public service delivery through technology. Developed by the Ministry of Interior in collaboration with the South Sudan National Police Service, the e-visa platform provides a unified window for both travellers and residents to access government immigration services securely.

There are different account types for citizens, residents, and foreign nationals:

Account Type Who It’s For Key Requirement
Citizens South Sudanese nationals National ID number
Residents Foreigners living in South Sudan Foreigner certificate
Visitors Foreigners requiring entry visa Passport details

Travellers must agree to the platform’s terms and conditions before submitting their applications. Data privacy and national security compliance are embedded in the system, with the government assuring applicants that their information is handled under official protocols.

As of June 2025, the following are the e-visa fees based on the exchange rate of $1 = 4,600 SSP:

Visa Type Fee (USD) Fee (SSP)
Single Entry (1 Month) $100 460,000 SSP
3-Month Multiple Entry $200 920,000 SSP
6-Month Multiple Entry $350 1,610,000 SSP

The e-visa platform is also expected to support South Sudan’s growing tourism ambitions by making travel planning more efficient.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has actively promoted the country’s natural and cultural attractions, such as Nimule National Park, Boma National Park, and the Sudd wetlands, with the goal of increasing international visits.

Travellers are advised to check their nationality’s eligibility before beginning the visa application process. The system includes a search function to verify whether a visitor qualifies for online application or must pursue an alternative route through a diplomatic mission.

The introduction of the e-visa also coincides with ongoing improvements at Juba International Airport and other entry points, where immigration officers have been trained to handle digital visa clearances.
