(JUBA) – Police officers in Juba have forcefully demolished the home of Ambassador Joseph Ayok Anei in the Thongpiny area, sparking concerns about the use of excessive force and the handling of property disputes.
Residents said the demolition took place without prior notice. A bulldozer was brought in under heavy police guard, and those inside the property were reportedly assaulted before being removed. Witnesses claimed that Anei Ayok, a relative of the ambassador, was handcuffed and taken away in a police vehicle.
Another resident described the destruction of property inside the house, including important documents, furniture and household belongings. “Everything was destroyed, from beds and chairs to personal papers,” the resident said.
Mr Anei Akuei Ayok, who identified himself as being responsible for the house, said he was detained for one day and tortured during the operation. He claimed that he suffered injuries to his eyes.
He further explained that the case involving ownership of the house was still pending in court, and no final ruling had been made. “We were not informed of any decision to demolish. The case was still in court and awaiting judgment,” he said.
According to Anei, a Sudanese national has also laid claim to the property, and both parties have been contesting the case legally. He added that the police deployment in the area remains in place while the matter continues with the judiciary.
Ambassador Joseph Ayok Anei, the house owner, is a well known South Sudanese diplomat. He is also the founder of UTS Primary School in Malekalel, Aweil South County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, where he has contributed to the education sector for many years.
