The Minister of Information for Greater Pibor has appealed to the national government to introduce programmes and initiatives aimed at engaging the youth to address the rising insecurity in the region.

Jacob Werchum’s plea comes in the wake of escalating insecurity, including incidents of road ambushes, cattle raids and child abductions, as highlighted by the Commissioner of Pochalla North County two weeks ago.

The Commissioner raised concerns over the proliferation of weapons among civilians, attributing it to the recurring violence in the area, and called for disarmament to restore peace and security.

Minister Werchum emphasised the importance of implementing youth focused projects and initiatives, especially in the absence of any disarmament plans for the region.

He stated, “We urge the central government to initiate projects that promote peace among the youth in Pochalla North, Pochalla South, and across the five counties of Greater Pibor. Currently, there are no development plans for our region.”

The Minister highlighted the significance of engaging the youth in productive activities to mitigate insecurity, ruling out disarmament as a viable solution at this stage.

He urged the youth to refrain from violence and participate in activities that contribute to security and enable the government to implement development projects.

Werchum stressed the connection between security and development.
