(KYIV) – Ukrainian forces have reclaimed 400 square kilometres of territory and eight settlements in a series of high impact counter-attacks that have shifted the tactical initiative away from Moscow. Former military intelligence officer Philip Ingram MBE reports that the breakthrough occurred at the junction of the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts in early February. The operation was timed to coincide with a security crackdown on Russian operated Starlink terminals, effectively blinding enemy drone units and severing frontline communications. This tactical evolution has allowed Kyiv to reverse Russian advances that previously took months to achieve in just a matter of days.
The Ukrainian military is increasingly adopting a sophisticated maneuver approach to warfare, integrating Western tanks and artillery with innovative domestic technology. A notable development is the deployment of the Rattel H ground robot and FPV drones tethered by fiber optic cables. This digital leash renders Russian electronic warfare systems ineffective as the command signal travels through a physical glass fiber thinner than a human hair, making the connection completely jam-proof.
Kyiv has also expanded its operational reach, striking deep into Russian territory. Ukrainian SBU drones recently targeted the Kaleyenko oil pumping station in Tatarstan, located 1,200 kilometres (approximately 750 miles) from the border. The facility, which serves as a hub for the Druzhba pipeline, suffered catastrophic damage to containment systems and storage tanks. Additionally, a strike on the Votkinsk machine building plant, 900 miles inside Russia, disrupted the production of Iskander missiles. These operations force the Kremlin to choose between reinforcing the front line or defending critical industrial and nuclear capable infrastructure.
On the Dnipro River, Ukrainian forces have cleared Russian garrisons from strategic islands used for terror campaigns against Kherson civilians. The Venom drone unit utilised modified TM62 anti-tank mines fitted with 3D printed fins to destroy Russian command hubs and ammunition dumps. By establishing an aerial blockade with explosive laden drones, Ukraine forced a Russian withdrawal, demonstrating that control of the skies remains paramount in modern conflict.
Evidence suggests the Russian military is facing a severe manpower shortage. Analysis indicates that elite formations, including the 155th and 40th Marine Brigades, have been shifted in a strategic regrouping that was intercepted by Ukrainian reconnaissance and targeted by HIMARS strikes. Most significantly, the Russian command has begun deploying personnel from the Strategic Rocket Forces—technicians responsible for the nuclear arsenal—as frontline infantry in the Toretsk sector. This cannibalization of high security personnel into the 20th regiment is viewed by analysts as a sign of absolute desperation.
Despite Moscow’s claims of an inevitable victory, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) suggests that Russia has failed to secure a permanent edge. The Russian dictator is currently trading thousands of lives for negligible territorial gains, with casualties estimated at nearly 40,000 per month. As the conflict enters its fifth year, the sustainability of the Russian meat grinder strategy is in question due to the rapid depletion of Soviet era stockpiles and human capital.
