(JUBA) – Kiir Reaffirms Ceasefire and Peace Deal Commitment on Independence Day
President Salva Kiir Mayardit has renewed his government’s commitment to peace, national security, and the full implementation of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), during his address marking the country’s 14th Independence Day.
Speaking at the national celebration in Juba on 9 July 2025, President Kiir said the foundation of South Sudan’s future must be peace, pledging that the guns will remain silent in favour of national dialogue, reconciliation, and democratic transition.
“Peace is and will always be our foundation. I keep my promise to you,” said Kiir. “My government is committed to full ceasefire across the country. No gun shall silence the voice of peace.”
The President assured citizens that his administration would continue to focus on protecting all South Sudanese people, regardless of their location. He said the people have the right to live without fear or intimidation.
“We will continue to secure the communities and protect every citizen, regardless of where they live. Our people deserve to live without fear,” Kiir declared.
The Revitalised Peace Agreement, which was signed in 2018, has faced delays in implementation, especially regarding the unification of armed forces, the permanent constitution, and preparations for national elections. However, the President used the national holiday to reassure the public and the international community of his administration’s resolve to fully implement the agreement.
“Revitalised peace agreement is our bridge to the future. We will implement it,” Kiir said.
He pledged that all necessary reforms would be completed to ensure the country holds a peaceful, credible election and avoids any return to war.
“We will unify our forces. We will have a peaceful, credible election and we will not go back to war,” he stated.
The president’s remarks come at a time when concerns remain high over the pace of peace implementation and rising tensions in some regions. Donors and international observers have also stressed the need for timely elections, inclusive governance, and transparent reforms.
