(JUBA COUNTY) – The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation has raised fresh flood alerts after reporting high water levels across major monitoring stations on the Nile and its tributaries. The latest update, released on 21 August 2025, shows several locations in South Sudan remain at or above alert thresholds, raising fears of flooding in the coming weeks.
At Mangala Station along the Bahr el Jebel, water levels measured 14.91 metres, a figure that remains within the high flood category. Although the level has slightly decreased compared to earlier readings, it is still above the danger mark.
In Juba, also on the Bahr el Jebel, the station recorded 13.07 metres. This falls into the alert level category, again slightly lower than previous days but still above the warning line.
Further north in Bor, the Bahr el Jebel recorded 13.93 metres, which also places the area under alert. In Malakal, where the White Nile flows, levels reached 14.04 metres and are increasing, prompting officials to maintain alert status.
The Sobat River is also rising, with Anakdiar Station showing 4.83 metres and climbing. Officials say this increases the possibility of flooding in the Upper Nile region.
In contrast, Nimule and Nyamlel stations remain within normal ranges, although trends there are moving upwards. Wau Station is reported to be stable and decreasing, providing some relief for communities nearby. No new data was available from Payii in Yirol County on the reporting day.

Officials have warned that given the conditions in Juba and Mangala, all Nile monitoring stations across South Sudan should be considered under alert. The ministry cautioned that mild to moderate flooding could occur downstream in the coming days.
The government says the monitoring exercise forms part of its early warning and preparedness system. Communities living in flood prone areas have been urged to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures.
South Sudan has faced repeated flooding in recent years, with entire counties in Jonglei, Unity, and Upper Nile States displaced by high waters.
The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation said it would continue to provide regular updates as part of efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and resilience.
