(WASHINGTON) – Claims circulating on social media allege that the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin spent hundreds of millions of dollars influencing the United States presidential elections in 2016, 2020 and 2024 to support Donald Trump’s campaigns.
No public evidence has been produced to substantiate the claim that such sums were directly spent to secure Trump’s election. United States intelligence assessments following the 2016 vote concluded that Moscow interfered in the electoral process through cyber operations and information campaigns. However, specific financial figures remain unverified.
The online commentary further asserted that responsibility for the death of Iran’s so called Supreme Leader lay with Russia, arguing that accountability ultimately rests with those at the top of political power structures. The statement appeared rhetorical and offered no factual detail or corroboration.
Separately, remarks aired on Kremlin state television have attracted attention after a Russian commentator reportedly said he regretted that an attempted assassination of Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania in 2024 had not succeeded.
The quote circulated online reads: “I still regret that the guy in Butler did not aim just an inch to the right.”
The comment refers to an incident in Butler during the 2024 United States election campaign in which Trump was injured in a shooting at a public rally. The attack prompted heightened security measures and widespread condemnation across the political spectrum.
Russian state media has frequently adopted a confrontational tone towards Western leaders and United States institutions. Statements made by individual commentators do not necessarily represent official policy, though critics argue that state television narratives often reflect broader Kremlin messaging.
There has been no official response from Moscow regarding the specific remark.
