(SAMARA) – A regional legislator in the Samara region has openly challenged the Russian dictator, demanding that officials share responsibility for the manifest failure of the military invasion of Ukraine. Grigorii Eremeev, a deputy in the Samara regional duma, broke a 25 year precedent of absolute legislative compliance by delivering a speech that directly criticised the ongoing special military operation. Eremeev noted that the Russian economy, representing approximately 2% of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP), is incapable of sustaining a conflict against Ukraine and its NATO allies, who together command over 50% of the world’s economic power.
The intervention occurred during a session originally convened to address the deteriorating regional economy. Eremeev argued that the invasion has fundamentally failed and that continued hostilities result in an irrational waste of both human life and material resources. Significantly, despite the restrictive political climate in Russia, the deputy’s microphone remained active throughout his address, a deviation from standard parliamentary procedure where dissent is typically silenced immediately. Footage of the speech has since circulated widely on Russian digital platforms, highlighting a rare public fracture within the regional political establishment.
Economically, the Samara region and other Russian administrative districts are facing severe fiscal distress, with several territories effectively declaring bankruptcy. The local currency, the Russian Rouble, remains volatile; at current rates, the projected losses in regional utilities and infrastructure continue to mount as funding is diverted to the front. 1,000 Russian Roubles is currently valued at approximately $13.12, reflecting the sustained pressure on the national economy. Analysts suggest that the failure to achieve a decisive victory in 2022 has led to a general degradation of the Russian domestic situation, with rising prices and failing public services.
Eremeev’s call for deputies to “admit guilt for the failure and apologise to citizens” has reportedly led to local authorities filing a police complaint against him for discrediting the armed forces. Despite the threat of criminal prosecution, the deputy maintained that the Kremlin’s current trajectory is unrealistic and unsustainable. The incident follows reports from other high profile sceptics, including the imprisoned Igor Girkin, who has similarly predicted a bleak outlook for the Russian economy and military by 2026.
