(JUBA) – The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of South Sudan, Hon. Ambassador Akuei Bona Malwal, on 17 July 2025 received a courtesy visit from the Diaspora Centre Organisation, a body representing South Sudanese citizens living abroad. The delegation was led by Mr. Mangok Mangok Mayen and included representatives from different parts of the global South Sudanese community.
The meeting took place in Juba and focused on strengthening cooperation between the government and the diaspora. The discussions centred around how best to support returning citizens, improve reintegration and ensure sustainable resettlement for South Sudanese who are choosing to come back home after years abroad.
Deputy Minister Malwal welcomed the delegation and expressed the government’s appreciation for the diaspora’s willingness to contribute to national development. He noted that the return of experienced and skilled citizens has the potential to play a significant role in rebuilding South Sudan’s institutions, economy, and social fabric.
Mr. Mayen, speaking on behalf of the Diaspora Centre Organisation, emphasised the group’s readiness to collaborate with government institutions. He highlighted the need for clearer policies to assist returnees, as well as the importance of inclusive dialogue to address challenges faced by those resettling in South Sudan after long absences.
Both parties acknowledged the vital contribution of South Sudanese abroad in areas such as remittances, advocacy, humanitarian support, and knowledge transfer. They agreed to pursue stronger institutional links and practical programmes that promote return, reintegration, and national unity.
This meeting also served to reinforce the government’s intention to maintain open dialogue with citizens abroad and to ensure their voices are reflected in policy making, especially regarding development and reconciliation efforts.
The visit concluded with a shared commitment to engage regularly and identify joint mechanisms for supporting returnees and fostering a sense of belonging for South Sudanese citizens who have lived in the diaspora for many years.
