(NAIROBI) – South Sudan and Sudan have begun formal discussions on the delineation of their shared airspace and the future structure of the Juba Flight Information Region. The talks opened on Wednesday in Nairobi, bringing together aviation authorities, regional bodies and technical experts to support a process viewed as important for South Sudan’s aviation growth and air navigation control.
The South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority (SSCAA) delegation is led by Director General John Woja Elinana. The meeting is chaired jointly by the International Civil Aviation Organization Eastern and Southern African Regional Office and the International Civil Aviation Organization Middle East Regional Office.
Officials say the Nairobi talks include representatives from Ethiopia and the Central African Republic, as well as delegates from the International Civil Aviation Organization World Air Services Agreements unit and technical experts from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency.
The discussions focus on defining clear airspace boundaries, improving coordination with neighbouring states and strengthening control over the Juba Flight Information Region. Aviation officials say an agreed framework will support safer flight operations, increase efficiency for airlines and help South Sudan advance towards full management of its own airspace.
The SSCAA communications team said it will provide regular updates to keep aviation stakeholders and the wider public informed of major progress during the negotiations.
