(ZANZIBAR) – South Sudan has joined other African states in a regional workshop aimed at strengthening the application of international food safety rules, as officials continue efforts to improve national standards and support trade growth.

The three day training, held in Zanzibar from 18 to 20 November 2025, brought together National Codex Committees from across the continent. The event was organised by the African Union Commission with support from the African Development Bank. Its main goal is to help member states better apply the Codex Procedural Manual, which guides the global development of food safety and quality standards.

The South Sudan National Codex Committee, represented by the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards in its role as Secretariat, delivered a presentation on the state of food safety regulation in the country. Officials outlined ongoing reforms, current gaps, and the work under way to align local practices with global standards.

The National Bureau of Standards said that South Sudan’s contribution reflects its broader effort to build a stronger national food control system and create a safer environment for consumers. Improved standards are also expected to support market access as the country seeks to expand regional and international trade in agricultural products.

Officials noted that a consistent and harmonised African position in global standard setting helps producers and regulators manage risks and meet international requirements. This is seen as especially important for landlocked and import dependent economies such as South Sudan, where poor food handling and weak oversight have continued to affect public health and market confidence.

The Bureau of Standards said South Sudan will continue to work with regional partners as part of wider national plans to improve quality assurance systems, enhance market competitiveness and safeguard consumers.
