(JUBA) – MTN South Sudan has announced the nationwide rollout of SpaceX’s Starlink internet service through its customer service and Connect Stores, a move aimed at boosting internet access and accelerating South Sudan’s digital transformation.
The partnership, initially launched in September 2024 following approval from the National Communications Authority, marks a major milestone in MTN’s efforts to bridge the digital divide and expand reliable connectivity across both urban and rural parts of the country.
MTN said the collaboration will provide access to fast satellite internet in areas previously beyond the reach of traditional mobile networks. Starlink’s service offers download speeds between 25 and 220 megabits per second (Mbps), with latency ranging from 50 to 90 milliseconds. These speeds are sufficient to support cloud computing, streaming, and other high-data digital services, which could greatly enhance business operations, education, and e-government services in South Sudan.
“This partnership with Starlink is a game changer for South Sudan. It enables us to connect even the most remote communities with dependable internet access that can transform lives, empower businesses, and drive national development,” said Olutayo Egunjobi, Head of Enterprise Business Unit at MTN South Sudan.
The service is expected to attract government institutions, schools, health centres, and small businesses seeking reliable connectivity. MTN has encouraged customers to purchase Starlink kits and subscriptions exclusively through its official outlets to guarantee authenticity and receive full technical support.
Industry analysts say the introduction of Starlink under MTN’s distribution will not only strengthen the telecommunications market but could also stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship in the digital economy. Improved connectivity is anticipated to enhance financial inclusion through mobile banking, boost e-commerce, and support the growing technology start-up ecosystem in Juba and beyond.
For a country where large parts remain underserved by traditional internet infrastructure, the new MTN-Starlink rollout could play a key role in unlocking South Sudan’s potential for digital growth, job creation, and social development.
