(JUBA COUNTY) – South Sudan’s standards authority has launched a regional essay competition aimed at engaging young people in discussions on trade, quality and market access, as the country continues efforts to integrate more effectively into African and global markets.
The South Sudan National Bureau of Standards announced the official launch of the 13th African Regional Standards Organization Essay Competition on 16 December 2025 in Juba. The bureau is a member of the African Regional Standards Organization, which promotes the harmonisation of standards across the continent.
This year’s competition focuses on the role of harmonised standards in reducing technical barriers to trade and promoting fair and just trade within African and global markets. The theme reflects ongoing efforts by African countries, including South Sudan, to improve cross border trade by aligning product and quality requirements.
The competition is open to university and college students under the age of 35. Participants are encouraged to submit essays that present fresh ideas on how standards can support trade, industrial development and consumer protection. Organisers say the initiative provides a platform for young people to contribute to policy discussions that directly affect economic growth.
According to the bureau, the essay competition is designed to raise awareness about the importance of standards in trade and development. It also aims to identify and nurture future standards ambassadors who can promote quality, safety and fair competition across Africa.
For South Sudan, where businesses often face challenges related to product quality, market access and regional compliance, the initiative highlights the role of education and youth engagement in strengthening the national quality infrastructure. Improved understanding of standards is seen as essential for local producers seeking to access regional and international markets.
The National Bureau of Standards said it will provide guidance and support to interested students through its offices. The bureau encouraged academic institutions to promote participation and support research on standards and trade related topics.
