(KYIV) – Ukraine has launched a record breaking aerial campaign against the Russian Federation, with 754 unmanned aerial vehicles detected over Russian territory and occupied Crimea within a single 24 hour period. This unprecedented surge in activity indicates a significant expansion in the domestic production capabilities of the Ukrainian Defence Forces. The drones appeared in waves throughout the day, prompting the Russian Ministry of Defence to issue frequent emergency updates regarding the scale of the incursions.
Reports from the Russian Ministry of Defence Telegram channel initially confirmed the detection of 621 drones on 8 March. By the morning of 9 March, the ministry informed the Interfax news agency that the total number of intercepted or detected drones had risen to 754 units. Despite these high numbers, the Russian authorities have not provided comprehensive details regarding potential damage to infrastructure or military assets. The scale of the deployment suggests that Ukraine is increasingly capable of overwhelming regional air defences through mass saturation tactics.
The regional breakdown of the operation reveals a broad geographic scope. The Bryansk region faced the highest concentration of activity with 235 drones reported, followed by 78 units over occupied Crimea and 61 over Krasnodar Krai. Other areas targeted included the Tula region with 48 drones, Belgorod with 41, and smaller numbers across Ryazan, Astrakhan, Kaluga, Kursk, and the Moscow metropolitan area. Aerial activity was also noted over the Rostov, Oryol, Smolensk, Voronezh, Volgograd, and Lipetsk regions, as well as the Republic of Adygea and the maritime zones of the Black Sea and Sea of Azov.
This massive deployment follows recent successful strikes using Ukrainian Liutyi long range drones. Notably, these assets recently targeted a chemical production facility in Kirovo Chepetsk within the Kirov region. The continued use of the Liutyi model, as documented by photojournalist Evgeniy Maloletka, demonstrates the evolving technical proficiency of the Ukrainian long range strike programme. Given the sceptical view of Kremlin claims regarding interception rates, it remains unclear how many of the 754 drones reached their intended military or industrial targets.
