(ABYEI) – The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) has continued to assist communities in Abyei through a series of infrastructure projects aimed at improving daily life and access to essential services. These efforts also carry significance for regional stability, including in neighbouring South Sudan, which shares a stake in the region’s development and peace.

One of the central initiatives was the restoration of Abyei FM, the area’s only operational radio station. The construction of new premises was completed under the Quip Impact Projects, with additional assistance from the Pakistani Battalion (PAKBATT) and Vietnamese military engineers. The project seeks to close a vital communication gap by reviving a trusted platform for public information, especially critical in remote and post conflict settings.

Alongside media restoration, the Nigerian Contingent of UNISFA played a major role in improving local transportation infrastructure by building two new bus stations in Abyei’s central market. These additions are expected to streamline public transport and facilitate commerce in the town, especially for traders and commuters who rely heavily on local travel services.

The Vietnamese Engineering Company also contributed by levelling roads near Abyei Hospital, a much-needed intervention to ease access, especially during the rainy season when unpaved roads often become impassable. Improved road conditions are expected to enhance emergency medical access and delivery of supplies, offering direct health benefits to residents.

These developments are part of UNISFA’s broader mandate to stabilise Abyei—a contested area between Sudan and South Sudan—by not only providing security but also supporting socio-economic development. Although these interventions may appear modest, they represent a consistent and practical approach to rebuilding basic infrastructure in a region that continues to face political uncertainty and environmental hardship.

For South Sudan, the developments in Abyei remain highly relevant, as progress in the disputed territory often reflects on the wider peace and cooperation efforts between Juba and Khartoum. A functioning radio station, better roads and improved transport services also have the potential to increase cross border collaboration in areas such as trade, healthcare and civic dialogue.

UNISFA’s work, supported by multinational contingents, shows how targeted, small scale interventions can make a real difference in fragile regions. Continued investment in such projects is seen by observers as critical not just for Abyei’s recovery, but for fostering stability in the greater Sudans.
