(JUBA COUNTY) – United Nations peacekeepers from China are expanding a successful school based agricultural project in Nakitun, South Sudan, to four additional schools across Juba County.
The initiative is supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and aims to train students in practical farming skills while promoting food security in their communities.
The project initially began as a pilot programme at Nakitun, where students were taught to cultivate donated seeds into fresh vegetables and other produce.
The expansion will see over 1,200 students receive hands on training in planting, nurturing, and harvesting crops. Organisers say the initiative not only teaches agricultural techniques but also encourages self reliance and community development.
UNMISS highlighted that the programme aligns with wider efforts to support South Sudan’s agricultural sector, particularly in urban areas where food insecurity remains a concern.
UNMISS Officials noted that the programme’s success relies on practical engagement and mentoring. Students learn to manage plots of land, plan crop cycles and ensure sustainable use of resources. The initiative also encourages collaboration among students, teachers, and community members, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility.
