(Juba) – South Sudan’s media industry is mourning the loss of one of its most respected figures, veteran broadcaster John Wani, who passed away this week. Wani, a founding voice of Radio Miraya, is remembered for his strong commitment to truthful journalism and for shaping the landscape of public radio in both Sudan and South Sudan.
John Wani joined Radio Miraya at its inception in 2005, when the United Nations backed station first launched in Khartoum. As an Arabic news anchor and reporter, he quickly became a recognisable and trusted voice across the country.
His work spanned more than 40 years, and he remained a prominent figure in regional broadcasting, earning respect for his clarity, fairness, and deep understanding of public service journalism.
Throughout his career, Wani was known for his on air professionalism and for his quiet leadership behind the scenes. Former colleagues described him as a mentor who approached his work with integrity, and as a man whose calm and authoritative voice was especially valued during times of uncertainty and national change.
His voice played a key role in shaping Radio Miraya’s reputation as a reliable source of news and information, especially during the critical years around the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and South Sudan’s path to independence in 2011. Wani was widely seen as a symbol of stability and trust, both for audiences and fellow journalists.
Friends and co-workers have spoken of his humility, kindness, and commitment to informing the public, often under challenging circumstances.
Tributes poured in from across the media landscape, with many highlighting how his work influenced a generation of South Sudanese journalists.
No specific cause of death was shared in the announcement of his passing.
