(TONJ) – A long standing rift between key intellectual leaders in Greater Tonj, Warrap State, was resolved during a reconciliation forum held recently in Tonj Town. The event, seen as a significant step towards peace and unity in the region, was chaired by Warrap State Governor Bol Wek Agoth.
Among the major figures involved were General Aleu Ayieny Aleu and Honourable Lewis Anei Kueindit, who publicly settled their differences during the gathering. The meeting brought together influential voices from across Greater Tonj, with participants expressing renewed commitment to peacebuilding and social harmony.
Governor Agoth praised the leaders’ willingness to reconcile, saying it was a timely move especially in light of the ongoing State of Emergency in the area. He described the occasion as a chance to reflect on the sacrifices made by the people of Warrap during the struggle for South Sudan’s independence, emphasising that unity among leaders would inspire youth and strengthen peace at the grassroots level.
In his address, the governor appealed to intellectuals to serve as role models for younger generations by promoting peaceful dialogue over violent confrontation.
“A pen is mightier than a gun,” he said. “It can build bridges, save lives in hospitals, and revolutionise agriculture. We must convince the younger generation that peaceful ideas—not weapons—will move our community forward.”
Both Gen. Aleu and Hon. Lewis echoed this sentiment, jointly urging youth in Warrap to forgive each other and put aside any political, ethnic or clan based grudges for the sake of the region’s future.
The leaders’ public handshake was met with applause and optimism by local residents and officials.
While no financial agreements or infrastructure plans were announced during the forum, the event’s significance lies in its potential to influence other regions in South Sudan facing similar internal divisions.
