(JUBA) – The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has awarded medals to 191 peacekeepers from the Bangladeshi Force Marine Unit, alongside personnel from ten other nations, for their service in maintaining secure waterways and supporting national development.
These peacekeepers have played a critical role in safeguarding rivers and transport routes that are vital for the delivery of humanitarian assistance, agricultural inputs, and commercial goods. By protecting key infrastructure, they ensure the smooth functioning of supply chains that underpin local economies.
Commander of the Bangladeshi Contingent, Captain (Colonel) Gazi Golam Morshed, highlighted the strategic significance of secure waterways.
“Maintaining safe river routes is essential for both humanitarian operations and the livelihoods of communities dependent on trade and transport.”
“These medals represent the United Nations’ recognition of our service in ensuring operational continuity and supporting economic activity through infrastructure protection,” added the Captain.
