(JUBA) – A growing number of car owners across South Sudan are noticing a damp, musty smell whenever they turn on their vehicle’s air conditioning system. This unpleasant odour often likened to wet socks or mildew is not only frustrating but can also pose health concerns if left untreated. The good news is that solving this issue does not require taking apart your entire dashboard.

The problem usually stems from a build up of bacteria, mould, and mildew inside the AC system, especially around the evaporator coils and air ducts. This is a result of moisture and dust being constantly cycled through the air conditioning system, creating a perfect environment for these organisms to grow. South Sudan’s hot and sometimes humid weather, especially during the rainy season, only makes matters worse.

One Juba driver, Tom Obialaga., reported doing the right thing by replacing the cabin filter and using a cleaning spray for the vents. While this was a good start, the underlying problem likely lies deeper within the system.

To properly deal with the root cause, experts recommend using a foaming or fogging spray cleaner made specifically for vehicle AC systems. These products are designed to reach the evaporator core, ducts, and vents, dissolving built up grime and killing bacteria. They are available in many auto stores and can be used easily at home by following the product instructions.

Here’s a quick guide:

Step What to Do
1 Buy a reputable AC foaming or fogging cleaner
2 Remove or loosen the cabin filter (usually under the dashboard or bonnet)
3 Spray into the filter housing and main air intakes
4 Turn on the AC in recirculation mode for 10-15 minutes
5 Let the system dry by airing out the car for a few hours

This method works without dismantling the dashboard and helps disinfect and deodorise the system from within.

To prevent the issue from returning, regular maintenance is essential. Always change your cabin (pollen) filter at least every 10,000 to 15,000 kilometres or once a year, depending on how dusty your driving environment is. In South Sudan, where roads are often unpaved and dusty, you may need to replace it more often.

These filters are typically found under the bonnet near the windshield or behind the glove box. A dirty or damp filter not only contributes to bad odours but can also trigger allergies, sinus infections, or asthma like symptoms especially for drivers who spend long hours behind the wheel.

Using a car dehumidifier, especially during the rainy months, is also advisable. These compact devices absorb excess moisture and help reduce foggy windows and damp smells. Drivers are encouraged to also inspect their vehicle’s AC drainage system regularly. If the drain is blocked, water can build up under the dashboard and soak into the carpets, creating a hidden source of mould.

Avoid washing your car interior with excessive water or wet cloths that do not dry quickly. Instead, use fast drying automotive interior cleaners, ideally with anti-bacterial properties. After driving or using the AC for long periods, crack open the windows or doors in the sun to let the cabin air out.
