(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Road rehabilitation work has officially started in Yei town, with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) funding and supporting the initiative. The project was launched on Wednesday morning at the county’s main gate, marking the start of repairs on the airport road.
Yei River County Commissioner Emmanuel Taban Seme welcomed the UNMISS delegation and described the project as a significant step forward for the county, which connects to neighbouring countries but has long faced challenges due to poor road conditions and damaged bridges, particularly during the rainy season.
Taban called on UNMISS to expand the repairs to feeder roads leading to markets, noting that addressing potholes and improving access routes would enhance service delivery and strengthen local security. He said better infrastructure could help reduce incidents of abduction, encourage trade, and promote the return of armed opposition groups to the peace process.
“We can achieve peace through development, which can encourage holdout groups to return and join the government,” he said.
UNMISS Sector Commander Mohammed Iqbal said that although the current project is modest in size, it reflects the mission’s broader mandate to foster peace, stability, and development in South Sudan. He emphasised the importance of improving access to remote communities to assess their needs more effectively.
South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) Greater Yei Commander Maj. Gen. John Lual assured UNMISS that the security situation in Yei is calm and that the military would support the work. However, he cautioned that some armed groups continue to operate in the area, posing potential risks to humanitarian staff.
Yei’s Director for Roads and Physical Infrastructure, Richard Lugala Godo, said the project was long overdue. He noted that improved roads would enhance mobility, reduce transport costs, and stimulate local economic activity, particularly for farmers and traders.
UNMISS reaffirmed its commitment to supporting development initiatives that not only improve infrastructure but also help build security and livelihoods in Yei and surrounding areas.
