(WARRAP STATE) – Five people, including three men and two women, were injured on Wednesday morning when two hyenas attacked residents in Malual-Chom, Thiet Payam, Warrap State.
Local authorities said the incident occurred in the early hours as residents were starting their day. The injured were taken to Tonj Hospital, where medical staff reported their condition as stable.
Community members responded quickly, managing to kill one of the hyenas. The second escaped and remains at large. Wildlife officers have been informed and efforts to locate the animal are ongoing.
According to local sources, the attack may have been triggered by events the previous day, when hunters allegedly killed a hyena cub. Residents believe this could have provoked the surviving adult hyenas.
Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution, avoid isolated areas during early mornings and evenings, and report any sightings of the remaining hyena to local officials.
In rural parts of Warrap State, communities live in close proximity to wild animals and depend on natural resources for survival.
Wildlife experts say such encounters are often the result of habitat loss, hunting, and seasonal food shortages, which can push animals into populated areas in search of food. They have called for greater awareness and preventative measures to reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future.
