Bishop Alex Lodung Soka of the Yei Diocese has expressed deep concern about the continued violence between the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) and armed groups in various areas of Central Equatoria.
Following a recent pastoral visit to Lasu, the Bishop recounted a violent incident that occurred last week, prompting many civilians to flee their homes. Some sought refuge in local churches after their properties were looted.
“No civilians were killed in that particular incident, thankfully,” Bishop Soka said. “I urge soldiers not to harm innocent people. Regardless of the reasons for the conflict, those who carry arms must understand the pain they inflict on innocent individuals.”
The Bishop also shared the distressing story of a family who became separated from their three children during the chaos. The children ran in different directions, and the family has been unable to locate them since.
“The mother searched everywhere but could not find them,” he said. “It is concerning – if adults fear being in the bush, including the soldiers, what will happen to young children?”
Bishop Soka appealed to all parties involved in the conflict to abandon violence and embrace dialogue. “War is not the answer,” he emphasised. “It is time for all parties to come together and engage in peaceful discussions in South Sudan. The longer we prolong the conflict, the more we deepen the suffering.”
