(KYIV) – The Commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, Robert “Madyar” Brovdi, reported on 3 February 2026 that Ukrainian drone units are now neutralising the equivalent of three Russian battalions every day. This shift in battlefield dynamics follows a significant increase in the production of fibre optic drones, which has allowed Ukrainian forces to move from a defensive posture to continuous offensive operations in the “kill zone”.

The Unmanned Systems Forces have set a production target of 7 million drones for 2026. This surge in supply has ended the previous necessity of conserving drones for major Russian assaults. Operators now conduct strikes around the clock, targeting Russian supply routes, footpaths, and infantry platoons. Brovdi estimated that between 1,000 and 1,500 Russian personnel are being killed or wounded daily by drone strikes alone, though he emphasised that even higher loss rates are required to achieve strategic objectives.

Ukrainian military doctrine is also evolving to move away from the rigid Soviet era principle of holding positions at all costs. Commanders are increasingly prioritising the preservation of personnel by allowing troops to withdraw from contested trenches and dugouts. Once a position is abandoned, drone swarms are deployed to clear the area of Russian forces before Ukrainian defenders retake it. This “distance strike” methodology aims to protect Ukraine’s most limited resource, its soldiers, while exploiting the technological advantage provided by the expanding drone fleet.

The 2026 defense strategy requires approximately 5.2 trillion Ukrainian Hryvnias (120 billion US Dollars) to stabilize the front and expand the strike zone to 100 kilometres. Ukraine intends to fund half of this amount, roughly 2.6 trillion Hryvnias (60 billion US Dollars), through its national budget and European Union loans, while seeking the remainder from international partners.
