(MAGWI COUNTY) – Magwi County authorities in Eastern Equatoria State have introduced strict new measures banning the sale of the medical drug Tramadol and the export of charcoal produced within the county. Officials say the steps are aimed at reducing drug abuse among young people and slowing the growing destruction of forests for commercial charcoal production.

The orders were issued on 8 December 2025 by Magwi County Commissioner Pole pole Benjamin Olum. Pharmacies and private drug sellers are now prohibited from selling Tramadol or any other substances considered harmful. Those who do not follow the order may face serious penalties. These include fines, the closure of their businesses and possible court action. Local officials say Tramadol abuse has become a major concern in Magwi’s main towns, where many young people are reported to be using the drug.

A second order bans all charcoal export from Magwi County to neighbouring countries, including Uganda. According to local authorities, the charcoal trade has encouraged widespread illegal tree cutting and has put pressure on natural forests. Under the new rules, any charcoal found in storage sites, forests or being transported on roads will be seized. It will then be sold through public auctions, with the money used to support road repair and maintenance within the county.

Security officials, health departments and local community leaders have been told to start enforcing the orders immediately.

The county leadership says the new measures are intended to protect young people and ensure the sustainable use of forest resources. They have also asked residents to cooperate with security agencies to prevent trafficking of drugs and illegal timber across the border.
