(KAMPALA) – The 15th (fifteenth) East African Community Inter Parliamentary Games have opened in Kampala, bringing together lawmakers and officials from across the region for two weeks of sports activities aimed at strengthening cooperation among member states.
South Sudan was represented at the opening ceremony by the Minister of East African Community Affairs, Gen Pieng Deng, together with Gen Gier Chuang Aluong of the South Sudan Golf Union and George Andrea Juma, who chairs the Parliament Games and Sports Committee. Other delegates from South Sudan also attended.
The opening took place at Kololo Independence Ground where delegates gathered to celebrate the start of the annual event. The sports programme is planned to support teamwork, good relations and physical fitness among parliaments within the East African Community.
The games will run from 5 to 17 December at different sports centres in Kampala. Competitions will feature several sporting disciplines in which parliamentary teams will take part.
Officials say the event continues to be a useful platform for building unity and promoting partnership across the region. South Sudan’s participation also helps to increase the country’s engagement in regional affairs as it works with neighbouring member states of the East African Community.
No costs related to South Sudan’s participation have been publicly shared, but the government regularly allocates funds for regional cooperation activities through the Ministry of East African Community Affairs. Based on typical travel and event support budgets, participation is expected to contribute to the growing economic links that come with increased movement between EAC capitals.
