In a recent statement at a UN Security Council meeting in New York, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sun Lei, emphasised the need for patience and tolerance in South Sudan’s political process. Lei highlighted that the international community should support regional mediation efforts and allow African-led solutions to prevail.
Acknowledging that South Sudan is the world’s youngest country, Lei underscored that a political transition will not happen overnight. He commended President Kiir for his commitment to avoiding a return to conflict and noted the government’s efforts in preparing for general elections.
Lei stressed the importance of respecting South Sudan’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, and urged all parties to refrain from unlawful interference. He welcomed President Kiir’s assurance of peace and the recent visit by the African Union Peace and Security Council to the country.
The ambassador urged calm, non-violence, and protection of civilians and infrastructure within South Sudan. Additionally, he called on the international community to increase financial and technical aid to support the country’s economic diversification and sustainable development.
