(JUBA) – The Ministry of Trade and Industry has held discussions with the leadership of the Greater Pibor Administrative Area on ways to strengthen trade and improve road access between Pibor and neighbouring Jonglei State.

On 18 September 2025, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon Atong Kuol Manyang, received His Excellency Gola Boyoi Gola, the Chief Administrator of the Greater Pibor Administrative Area, together with his delegation in Juba.

Talks centred on the need to improve connectivity between Pibor and Jonglei, with emphasis on border areas close to Ethiopia. Mr Boyoi stressed that improved security between the two regions is creating an opportunity to expand trade and encourage more movement of goods and services. He noted that reliable road links are essential for local traders, especially those who rely on cross border markets with Ethiopia.

Minister Kuol welcomed the delegation and assured them that the ministry is ready to support small businesses and community initiatives. She said that her office will work with micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to build self-reliance and reduce dependence on imports.

The minister also stressed that peace and stability are essential for development, noting that without security, economic growth cannot take place. She pointed out that government backing for entrepreneurs would help strengthen South Sudan’s business environment and create opportunities for job creation.

Community leaders and observers have also called for renewed focus on long neglected trade routes. Roads such as Pochalla–Gilo and Jebel Raat–Dimo, which link both Boma and Pibor to Ethiopia, remain closed or difficult to access. Stakeholders argue that reopening these routes will empower traders and improve the flow of goods between the two countries.

Local business voices welcomed the meeting. Some noted that with support from the Ministry, ventures such as packaging companies and agricultural cooperatives could expand, creating jobs and helping to build a self sufficient economy.
