(JUBA) – Twelve suspects, including a member of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF), have been arrested in Gumbo Sherikat during a police operation aimed at dismantling a criminal network accused of armed robbery and property crimes.
According to Major General James Monday Enoka, spokesperson for the National Police Service, officers recovered several weapons during the targeted operation, including a pistol, machetes, locally known as pangas and a collection of master keys believed to have been used to break into shops.
General Enoka said the suspects were part of a group that has been “causing havoc” in the area, frequently moving between Gumbo Sherikat and Bor in Jonglei State to avoid capture.
“These individuals were found in possession of a pistol and white weapons, which include pangas and multiple types of keys used to break and open shops,” he stated.
Police believe the arrested group has been involved in a series of violent crimes, including looting and armed robbery, affecting both residential and commercial areas. Their movement between regions allegedly helped them avoid arrest until now.
Summary of items seized:
| Items Recovered | Quantity/Type |
|---|---|
| Firearms | 1 pistol |
| Bladed weapons | Several pangas (machetes) |
| Break-in tools | Multiple master keys |
General Enoka expressed gratitude to the police units and security personnel involved in the operation. He also thanked local residents for cooperating with law enforcement, saying their tips and vigilance were instrumental in the successful arrests.
“This shows that when the public works closely with us, we can significantly reduce crime,” he said.
The arrest of an active SSPDF member among the suspects raises concern about the involvement of security personnel in criminal networks. However, police have not yet released further details regarding his role or whether he acted alone.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and the suspects are expected to be charged under the country’s penal laws.
The operation is part of a wider police effort to clamp down on organised crime in urban and semi urban areas in South Sudan. Recent months have seen increased efforts in Juba and surrounding regions to address growing concerns about security and the rule of law.
Police have urged the public to continue reporting suspicious activities and assured residents that more security measures will be implemented to protect communities and curb criminal operations.
