Security personnel in Tonj South County intercepted a woman late last night at the Alol checkpoint in Tonj town carrying 1,227 rounds of ammunition concealed in bags mixed with dura (sorghum grain).

The suspect, identified as Aguer Akuer, was apprehended while travelling by bus around 10:30 PM. Aguer claimed that the bullets were given to her by a man who owed her four million South Sudanese Pounds and instructed her to deliver the ammunition to a police officer residing in Maper, Rumbek, who would then buy the bullets and pay her share.

Authorities confirmed the confiscation of the bullets along with an unspecified amount of money, a knife, a packet of biscuits, and perfume in Aguer’s possession. Tonj South County Commissioner John Ayititiak Warwien commended the night patrol for their vigilance, preventing a potential tragedy.

Commissioner Warwien expressed surprise at the involvement of a woman in such activities and stated that Aguer remains under thorough investigation to uncover those responsible for the supply and distribution of the bullets.

This incident marks the second ammunition smuggling case intercepted in Tonj South this year, following a similar incident two months ago involving a young man traveling from Wau on a motorbike carrying boxes of bullets. He was injured during a pursuit in the Makuei area before confessing his intention to transport the ammunition to Biemnhom.
