(JUBA) – The Ministry of Health and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the aim of enhancing healthcare services throughout South Sudan.

The agreement, signed on Thursday in Juba, is expected to strengthen cooperation in addressing challenges that hinder access to essential medical care.

The partnership will facilitate operational collaboration, with specific project protocols to be followed. Officials note that this represents a significant advancement in enhancing capacity and delivering health projects more efficiently, particularly in underserved regions.

During the signing ceremony, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health Hon. Dr Aninn Ngot Ngot Mou reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting UNOPS-led initiatives in the health sector.

Dr Aninn expressed the Ministry of Health’s dedication to providing UNOPS with necessary assistance in implementing health-related activities nationwide.

She also expressed her appreciation for UNOPS’ contributions, emphasizing that the partnership would directly benefit the people of South Sudan.

UNOPS Country Manager Mrs Petronella Halwiindi stated that the agreement would promote closer cooperation in identifying priority areas for improving health services.

She added that the MoU would enable both parties to work closely in addressing challenges identified by the Ministry of Health, ultimately enhancing services for the people of South Sudan.

As the operational arm of the United Nations, UNOPS will offer technical expertise in infrastructure, project management, and procurement to support the Ministry’s healthcare delivery plans.

These services are vital in expanding access to medical care, enhancing hospital facilities, and ensuring a timely supply of essential medicines and equipment.

In South Sudan, the high cost of medical supplies and inadequate infrastructure remain significant obstacles to healthcare access.

Officials are optimistic that with UNOPS’ support, investments in the health sector will become more efficient, ensuring that resources reach the facilities and communities most in need.

The Ministry of Health highlighted that this collaboration aligns with its strategic vision of building a more robust health system, reducing inequalities in healthcare access, and promoting long-term public health improvements.
